The "Rock Fairy" and Birthday GirlS!

12:54pm....the phone rings. Caller Id reads: Gilbert Unified....? Hello? It's Penny from the nurses office. She proceeds to tell me that my son Parker has managed to get a rock stuck in his ear, and that she is not allowed to try and get it out. So....."Do I need to come get him?" "YES." Lovely-all 3 of the other kids are sleeping. Where is Dad? Closer to the school than I am....so he goes to pick him up, and I quickly call Dr. Lafe. (who of course is on lunch at the time). He tells me he needs to see him to determine what needs to be done. Apt. time 2:40pm. I meet big P and little P hops in the car with me, and we head for the Dr.'s office. Dr. Lafe tries to get behind the rock with his tool, but can see that it is wedged up against the drum. Little P is in tears of pain. An apt. is made with an ENT Dr. and we are to see him at 5pm. Big P and I meet and he keeps the other 3, while I head to Phoenix with little P. I'm overwhelmed with emotions....mad, bugged, stressed, nervous. 5:40pm, and we're finally taken back to a room. A few short min. later we meet Dr. McKennan. Amazing Dr....He explained to Parker (in somewhat kid terms) what he would be doing to get the rock out.
Parker gives him the "go ahead" and the Dr. sticks the tool in his ear to try and move the rock out, without puncturing the drum. SCARY! Parker freaks, yanks his head away and bursts into tears. I'm of course crying at this point. This happens 3 more times, and then the Dr. explains that he needs to book an OR for tomorrow afternoon. He talks to little P again and tells him what will happen tomorrow in the OR, and how they'll have to put him to sleep so he won't feel the pain of the rock scraping against the canal of his ear. He asks Parker if he wants to let him try one more time, or if he wants to wait till tomorrow. One more try. Again, Parker yanks his head away, but this time the Dr. had his tool behind the rock, so it actually pulled the rock out almost all the way! He has to go in one last time to simply move the rock completely out. Done! There was a little blood, but no damage to the drum or canal. His ear is a little sore, but the abrasions will heal quickly. Thank goodness!
The Dr. put the rock in a little bag type thing and told Parker that maybe if he put it under his pillow that the "Rock Fairy" might come and leave him something....just like the "Tooth Fairy" does. Is he for real? I think the lesson was learned....what do you think? Parker picked a toy and a sticker, and I think completely forgot about any pain or trauma that he may have been experiencing.
Julio! It's Julie's 27th Birthday tomorrow (November 21st)! Julie is one of the hardest working girls I know. She's a nurse at Banner Baywood, and has to work on her Birthday-sad! Julie is so smart; I used to always want to cheat off her in High school.....ya, I'm not proud. She has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. She's such a good example to me and to others. She's a wonderful wife and Mommy....and best of all....cousin! I love you, and hope you have the best Birthday! We'll have to go get pedicures for your Birthday this weekend ;) !
It's also one of my very close friend Lacee's 27th Birthday (November 21st)! I suck at remembering Birthday's, but I'll never forget yours.....thank Julie ;) Lacee is another person I look up to, for so many reasons. Another smartie pants, who worked her butt off to be a Dental Hygienist! Lacee is such a hard worker, and never complains about a thing. She has two little ones (twins)....Jessie Mae and Blaze! So cute! No matter how many days we go without talking or seeing each other, we will always have this special "closeness." I love that about my friends. Life gets crazy when you are married and have children...but it's always nice to have those kind of friends that you will never grow apart from. Love you Lacee, and hope you have a special day tomorrow!
